How employees are building apps to make their organisations better

Did you know that you could have a working app up in 8 hours, have it looking great in 16 hours and have it launched companywide in 24 hours?

Power Apps takes away the need to buy dozens of applications or software tools from third-party vendors, keeping it all on a platform you know.

How does Power Apps work?

Power Apps gives non-developers and non-techies the ability to create custom applications that work onmobile to support many business tasks across many functions.  These apps allow people to share and capture information on the go, simplify processes and remove manual or paper-heavy tasks.

Power Apps is a platform that provides rapid custom application development that meets business needs. It can be used to create applications that connect to enterprise data stored either on the underlying data platform (Common Data Service) or in multiple online and local data sources (SharePoint, Excel, Office 365, Dynamics 365, SQL Server, etc.).

Applications created using Power Apps provide rich workflow and business logic capabilities to transform manual business processes into automated, digital processes. In addition, applications compiled using Power Apps are dynamically designed and can run smoothly in the browser or on mobile devices (phone or tablet).

What can you achieve with Power Apps?

  1. Data Integration: Using Microsoft’s Common Data Service, your employees can pull business data from over 200 sources such as SharePoint, Excel, Dropbox, Dynamics 365, PowerPoint, Twitter or many others to create these apps.
  2. Boosted Productivity: These apps can help employees get through tasks or blockages much quicker. For example, a new employee arrives and logs onto the Onboarding App. The newbie then submits all their payroll information, documentation and permissions and requests. HR benefits and the new employee can easily navigate their first few days.
  3. Speed: Because of its flexibility and ease of use, apps can be built in hours or days. Power Apps extracts many time-consuming elements (Creating user interfaces, links from form fields to code and data) and replaces them with an intuitive drag and drop interface.
  4. Automation: Organisations can automate some functions and processes with apps, such as sending information or updates.
  5. Security and Compliance: Companies benefit from full security, as every app created in PowerApps automatically links to Microsoft’s active directory domain service (ADDS), which authenticates, allows and enforces security policies for all devices and users. Also, the apps built on Microsoft’s CDSare automatically compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Custom Power Apps built by organisations and their Centre’s of Excellence.

AccuweatherAn employee was promoted after they built a Power App that helped employees easily find documents in SharePoint. This saved time for many across the organisation as they didn’t have to constantly ask admins or legal for the documents that they needed. See the story here.

Virgin Atlantic: The software development team was asked to build an app but had no mobile app development experience. The result? An efficient Safety and Compliance app that makes sure all staff on the ground had the necessary equipment and all the safety checks were conducted. They could also spot trends and pass on the information to the engineering team. See more about this.

Schlumberger:  This company supplies tech for reservoir characterisation, drilling, production and processing in the oil and gas industry. They have over 100 000 employees, operating in 85 countries.They have built over 50 apps in Europe, including:

  • Event Portals
  • Workshop Feedback App
  • Rating App
  • People Announcement App
  • Event Management App

Transalta:  This multi-national power generation company built an internal resource planning and decision validation tool to minimise operational costs across its business.

When a user opens the app, they are prompted to fill out fields such as the time of day, site location, number of turbines, and fault code. The app then generates prescribed actions from TransAlta’s real-time data feed indicating how the problem should be resolved, how long it will take, and the number of technicians required to safely bring the equipment back online.

In the first two weeks of using the app, they had recovered the cost of building and implementing Power Apps.

“This project has had an immediate impact on our business and the way we deliver IT services. Not only have we solved an important business problem, we have delivered the solution at a fraction of the traditional IT project cost – both from an implementation and TCO perspective. “- Nipa Chakravarti: Vice President of Information Technology

GSK: This world-known consumer healthcare manufacturing company produces medicines and treatments for all sorts of ailments and sicknesses, from cold sores to HIV.

They’ve built a team of “Power Rangers” that are from all functions across the company, and who have worked there anything from one to 20 years. Some of the apps they have built so far:

  • Analysis of Staff Survey data app using BI
  • Factory Safety App
  • Product Streamlining App: This app helps log incoming material and track the medicine batchesuntil it is shipped. Knowing how long it takes to go through the manufacturing process helps them pinpoint certain batches or products that are taking longer than they should, cutting down manufacturing time and getting more products out the factory.

How to set up your own Centre of Excellence

  1. Identify the right people within your organisation – These people don’t have to be developers or part of the technical teams. These are the people that love learning, are willing to help, and have an interest in innovation.
  2. Accountability – Once the team is gathered, give them the time and space to learn the tool and share their learnings with each other. Schedule Power Apps Training Days that can accelerate their learning window.
  3. Development – Acknowledge that this is a new part of the business and allow people to come together and support each other, help others unblock bugs and fix issues, empower each other, and share constantly.
  4. Start small – You might want to conquer the organisational problems immediately, but don’t. Start with the small, low risk challenges that people are having within their own departments and teams.
  5. Testing Groups – Identify groups of testers within the company that will test and encourage others to test the apps. Gauge their sentiments, analyse their feedback, and make changes and improvements.
